How to Use Your iPod for Portable Storage

There are many types of mp3 and portable music players available, but anyone who walks down a busy city street at rush hour can tell you that the iPod has become the most ubiquitous. A decade after its initial launch, iTunes now comes standard on many computers or is one of the first programs users download to accommodate their music collection. Aside from the ability to carry your favorite songs with you wherever you go, many iPod owners don’t realize just how functional this gadget can be.
While iPods can store a large number of music files, they can also provide a more general level of portable file storage. You can use your iPod to save and transport valuable computer files, documents, software, and more. As each new generation of mp3 players tend to have larger memory capacity, this is a viable option not only for portable storage but as an external drive.
1. Connect your iPod to your computer. This should be straight-forward if you’ve owned the device for awhile. If you have just purchased the player, follow the instructions enclosed in the packaging to ensure it is ready for use.
2. Once the iTunes program is open and running, select the iPod icon in the Source pane and click the tab labeled “Summary.”

3. Select either “Enable disk use” or “Manually manage music and videos.” Both of these options will allow you to use your iPod as a disk. However, be aware that choosing “Manually manage music and videos” will stop your iPod from automatically syncing with iTunes.
3. Drag files into iPod disk folder. Once you have changed your iPod settings, your iPod will appear as a disk either on your desktop or in your “My Computer” folder. Open this folder and drag files into it to store them on your iPod.
Reminder: Always eject your iPod from your computer before disconnecting. There is an eject function within iTunes, or you can right click on the disk icon and select to eject manually. Remembering to eject your iPod is particularly important when using your iPod as a storage device.

Keyboard Troubleshooting

If you begin to experience problems with your keyboard not working or some of the keys not responding, the first thing you should try is to Press CTRL+ALT+DEL (all at the same time).
Depending on what version of Windows you have, you should get the Task List. In Windows 7 you may be given a list with the last option being Start Task Manager and that is the one you select.  A box will pop up that says Windows Task Manager.

In the image above, you will see a list of all tasks currently running including this tutorial being created called “Keyboard Troubleshooting”.
On the right hand side you will see in the title bar, the word “Status”. Under the Status column it indicates which programs are running as shown in the below image.
Not the case for the example above, but on your computer check for any programs that say “Not Responding” and select the first one with a “Not Responding” status. Next, click the End Task button on the bottom of the pop-up box as shown here:

Be sure to repeat the process until all tasks labeled “Not Responding” have ended. You will need to do this one at time.  Periodically check if the keyboard will work properly.
Check the keyboard is properly connected to the computer. If the keyboard has been disconnected, try rebooting the computer.

Recommendation
Your keyboard is one of the dirtiest parts of your computer.  Practice cleaning your computer on a regular basis.  This will help maintain your keyboard.  You can purchase a can of compressed air to blow air in the tiny spaces in between your keys to remove small particles of dust.
If you have tried a number of things and your keyboard is still not working, disconnect the current one and plug in a keyboard that you know is working if one is available.   This may determine if you need to get a new keyboard or if you have a central processing unit (CPU) problem.

Creating Your Own Portable Software

If you often need to access computers that belong to other people or other offices, you may have a hard time working the way you need to -- you may not have access to the programs you usually have. Google tries to make working on multiple computers simpler by automatically bringing your browsing history and bookmarks to any installation of Chrome when you sign in. You also have Google Docs. For other programs, though, you're usually on your own.
Carrying the software you need with you as you move from one computer to another may seem like an option. The problem with this approach is that you wouldn't usually be able to install your programs on someone else's computer. It would also take time. The right approach to this problem, then, is to carry the software you need, in portable form.
What is a portable program?
Programs don't necessarily need to be installed on a computer's hard drive before they are run. Installing is usually only desirable for the convenience that it offers. With most programs, you could easily store the executable file and other supporting software in the form of a single self-contained file on a portable hard drive, flash drive or anything else, and run them directly off these storage devices. The registries of the computers that these programs are run on are not altered.
Many websites on the Internet offer useful inventories of programs for common needs -- LibreOffice Portable is a Microsoft office replacement; Notepad++ works in place of Notepad; Inkscape replaces Adobe Illustrator and GIMP replaces Photoshop.
What if you want the real thing and not a replacement?
While freeware replacements for popular programs get a few things done well, they cannot offer the depth and functionality of the big-name programs. If you wish to carry those programs around, you'll need to make them portable yourself, using up portable application creator.
How a portable application creator works
If you're interested in making your own portable applications, many free options exist, Enigma Virtual Box, Evalaze and Cameyo being among the most popular. When you direct one of these freeware programs at any Windows software, they gather all the necessary files together and create a single executable application. You get to launch the program and use it on any Windows computer as if it were installed on that computer.
It's as simple as that
Before you create a portable version of a program, you need to make sure that the computer you create it on doesn't have a regular version of the program already installed. It can cause software conflicts to have the program installed on it.
You also need to remember that portable application creator s don't usually create fully portable applications with their default settings. Often, the settings they come with allow the portable applications that they create to leave a few traces behind on any computer that they are used on. You need to select the right options to make sure that no registry changes or other traces are left behind.
Once you have these simple settings applied, you'll be on your way to carrying an entire computer's worth of software around with you on a flash drive.

How to Share Large Files Using Dropbox

Online photo sites and Facebook albums have made it easier to share pictures and videos without having to upload and e-mail extremely large files. However, there are still instances where large image files, documents, PDFs, or other files need to be sent from one location to another. In many cases, e-mail servers dictate the maximum file size that can be sent or received, and large files often get caught in people’s spam folders or are otherwise never delivered. Dropbox is a free program that allows you to upload and share files with others using a mutual location on the Internet. You can use it as a web-based service, but it is most functional when you download the software to your hard drive.
1. Download the Dropbox software. Visit dropbox.com to get started. Follow the instructions that apply to your computer’s operating system. Once the software is downloaded, Dropbox will automatically create a new folder on your computer. You can create folders within the main Dropbox folder to keep files organized and to control who can see select files.
2. Add files to your Dropbox. The Dropbox folder functions the same as any other folder on your hard drive. You can copy and paste files from another location or drag and drop the files into the Dropbox folder. Anything added to your Dropbox folder will automatically sync to the web. If you have shared a particular folder with someone else, they will receive a pop-up notification on their desktop to let them know that you have added files. If you prefer to add files via the website, simply click on “Upload” and add the files you want to share.

3. Share files and folders with others. From your desktop folder, click on “Share this folder” in the left-hand pane.

If you haven’t downloaded the software, click on “Share a folder” on the website. You will be prompted to add the user’s e-mail address and they will receive an automatically generated message information them that you have shared files with them.

Whether you’re sending files for work or for personal reasons, Dropbox is an easily accessible and user-friendly option for sharing large pictures, documents, or other files.

Samsung Doubles Down on Galaxy Phones

Samsung on Thursday unveiled two new devices, the Galaxy S6 edge+ and the Galaxy Note5.
The smartphones reportedly will be available in the United States starting Aug. 21.
Samsung also announced its NFC mobile payment service, Samsung Pay, will launch in the United States Sept. 28.
The Note5 reportedly incorporates many of the Galaxy S6's features and design elements. It has a glass front and rear, a solid metal frame, a fast octacore Samsung Exynos processor and a high-quality camera.

Unlike earlier versions of the Note, however, the Note5 has a fixed battery, and it no longer supports microSD cards.
These changes may not be a problem for consumers, but "you'll probably hear an uproar from the tech community," said Tuong Nguyen, a principal analyst at Gartner.
"You're getting rid of the phone in two years anyway, so who cares? People are comfortable with upgrading to the latest and greatest device because product releases are so frequent," he told TechNewsWorld.

Specs for the Galaxies

The Note5 is slightly larger and heavier than the S6 edge+. Both have the Exynos octacore 64-bit processor and 4 GB of RAM. They also both have a 5.7-inch Quad HD Super Amoled 2,560 x 1,440 screen with 518 ppi resolution -- but only the S6 edge+ has a dual-edge screen.

Both devices have a 16-MP OIS rear camera and a 5-MP front camera with a focal length of 1.9.
They use a 3,000 mAh battery that offers fast wired and wireless charging.
Both devices offer 4K video filming and let users live-stream YouTube videos in full HD to any smartphone, tablet, PC or smart TV.

Power and Price

One of the most frequently voiced complaints about Samsung smartphones is that they are power guzzlers, but the new models might just resolve that issue.
The Exynos processor uses Samsung's latest 14nm FinFET process and "goes a long way to reduce power consumption," said Wayne Lam, a principal analyst at IHS.
However, the Note5 and S6 edge+ "are still large and relatively expensive," Lam told TechNewsWorld, "definitely more expensive than the base model iPhone 6 Plus, based on pricing I've seen from AT&T."

Taking On Mobile Payments

Both the S6 edge+ and the Note5 support NFC and Samsung-owned LoopPay's magnetic secure transmission.
That combination means Samsung Pay will not be restricted to NFC point-of-sale terminals, as MST will work with any POS terminal.
Samsung reportedly will run an invitation-only beta of its mobile payment technology in the U.S. later this month, and it will fully launch the service Sept. 28.
Samsung Pay initially will run only on the S6 edge+ and Note5. Samsung reportedly will release a free software update for the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge later this month.

Nibbling at Apple

The release of the new Samsung phones "is clearly a preemptive move to capture as much attention and press as possible before Apple releases the update to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus," Lam said.
Apple's unveiling is expected next month.
Samsung's Note line "has suffered in the past year with the overwhelming success of the iPhone 6 Plus," Lam observed, and the new devices "are aimed squarely at taking back the market leadership [Samsung] established on large format smartphones."
The Note5 and S6 edge+ are both available in 32-GB and 64-GB versions.
"There's an opportunity for 128-GB models for both devices, but that's not in Samsung's strategy for now," said Jeff Orr, a senior practice director at ABI Research.
"It's a different Samsung now," he told TechNewsWorld.
"They no longer go make a product for a niche market, knowing full well they'll have to cut back at some point," he said. "They don't want to be everything to everyone but want to maintain their brand and their products, and deliver on continuous innovation."

Chromebooks Gaining on iPads in School Sector

As school districts across the country increasingly invest in technology for their students, the volume of personal computers in the classroom is surging.
And it is Chromebook – notebook computers that run on Google’s Chrome operating system – an upstart in a sector dominated by Apple and Microsoft, that is largely responsible for the growth trend in schools, according to a new report from IDC, a market research firm.
Last year, the market for desktop, laptop, tablets and two-in-one computers shipped to kindergarten-through-12th-grade schools and institutions of higher education in the United States amounted to $7 billion, according to estimates from IDC.
In all, the company said, about 13.2 million systems were shipped in 2014 – about 33 percent more than the year before.
With its line-up of iPads, MacBooks and other higher-priced products, Apple reaped the greatest revenue in the sector last year, accounting for nearly half of the total dollars spent on personal computers in education, the report said.
In terms of the sheer numbers of devices sold, however, Microsoft remained in the lead. In 2014, about 4.9 million Windows devices, including notebooks and desktops, shipped to schools, giving Microsoft a roughly 38 percent market share in unit sales, IDC said.
Apple, meanwhile, shipped about 4.2 million devices for schools, including desktops, notebook computers and tablets, accounting for about 32 percent of the education market, according to the report.
But the Chromebook category is fast gaining traction in the United States.
Last year, about 3.9 million Chromebooks were shipped in the education sector, an increase in unit sales of more than 310 percent compared with the previous year, IDC said. By contrast, iPad unit sales for education fell last year to 2.7 million devices, compared to 2.9 million in 2013, according to IDC data.
“Even if Microsoft is No. 1 in volume and Apple is No. 1 in revenue, from the growth perspective, nobody can beat Chromebook,” said Rajani Singh, a senior research analyst at IDC who tracks the personal computer market and is the author of the report.
In the first half of this year, she said, roughly 2.4 million Chromebooks shipped to schools compared with about 2.2 million Windows-based desktops and notebook computers.
“There’s very close competition between Windows and Chromebook,” Ms. Singh said. “It’s becoming more competitive.”
Use of Chromebooks is “growing fast,” said Rajen Sheth, a Google Chromebook executive. “It’s great to see the overall market for these kinds of devices growing as a result.”
Anthony Salcito, vice president for worldwide education at Microsoft, said that his company’s products, like Office, could be used in schools not only with Windows systems but with Android and iOS as well.
“We are focused on empowering educators and inspiring students to achieve more, on whatever device they choose,” he said.
Ryan James, a spokesman for Apple, said there were more than 15 million iPads in use in classrooms around the world.
“Teachers and students continue to dream up new ways to make them part of their everyday lesson plans,” he said.
